Parliament has paid tribute to the late Kawempe North member of parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya recognizing him as a courageous person.
Speaker Anita Among has led Parliament in paying tribute to former Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya describing the deceased as a friendly and loving person, whose work and generosity enabled him to represent his people in the 11th Parliament, and he did so with dedication and passion.
“It is with a deep heavy heart that we convene here again to pay tribute to our own, our colleague Muhammad Ssegirinya (Kawempe North) who passed on yesterday. On behalf of the Parliament of Uganda and on my own behalf, I lay our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, to the people of Kawempe North, to the Muslim fraternity, to the National Unity Platform and to the people of Uganda,” said Among.
“Despite the short tenure he has lived as a Legislator in the 11th Parliament, Ssegirinya served the people of Kawempe North with dedication. His record of advocacy for better living conditions and humanity was very clear. He was very passionate about health services in Kawempe. I remember one time when he bought a CT Scan machine and bought ambulances and that kind of thing,” stated Speaker Among.
The Parliamentary Commission took all the responsibility of meeting the cost of Ssegirinya’s medication in both Kampala and Nairobi. We were hopeful that one day one time, we would be seated in this House with Ssegirinya, but God’s timing is never our timing. He is no more, he is going to be with Allah. It is a sad day for us as we bid farewell to Ssegirinya. The painful reality has dawned on us as brothers, as beloved colleagues that death is so cruel and real. At any one time, any of us will be there- Speaker Among.
In a strange twist, as opposed to the all the other tributes where the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja or her juniors have led Government's side in paying tribute during the special sittings, this time around, Government abandoned Ssegirinya’s body and instead, Speaker Among called on Abdu Katuntu (Bugweri County) to read the tribute, saying this is intended not to leave a vacuum during the sitting.
“Ssegirinya lived on industrious life, and through hard work, dedication and perseverance, rose from humble beginnings to become a Member of Parliament. Ssegirinya was deeply passionate about community mobilization, journalism and food security, especially in his constituency, as exemplified through his passionate advocacy for various causes, including; Community mobilization for health services through the construction of Kawempe North Hospital from which his constituents and other Ugandans accessed free health care services,” noted Katuntu.
