Speaker, Among Urges People of Greater North to Vote Out MPs, Boycotting Parliament Regional Sittings.

Updated: Aug 28, 2024

Speaker Anita Among has asked the people of Greater North not to vote for any of the current MPs back to Parliament in 2026 if any of them boycott the Northern Regional Parliament Sitting.

The Speaker issued the order while addressing residents at Pece Stadium in Gulu City, where she thanked the Opposition MPs who defied the Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi’s pronouncement to boycott the sittings in Gulu, and she revealed that Parliament will take a roll call to establish the MPs that have attended and those that snubbed the sittings.

“I want to thank Kilak South mp Gilbert Olanya , former Leader of Opposition Betty Aol and Anthony Akol because the Opposition said they are going to boycott this sitting. I want to tell you people of the Greater North that whoever boycotts this session, don’t return that person back to Parliament, because we are going to discuss issues that concern the greater North. I have been told to tell you that Gulu and the Greater North is a blessed place. The Greater North is in the history of Uganda for having had a President in this country so it isn’t by mistake that we are here,” noted Among.

The speaker also visited the late Oulanya's graveyard at his home in Omoro district where he promised to pay school fees for the late's children

The Speaker also scoffed at the Opposition over their assertions that the sittings are a wastage of taxpayers’ money, wondering why such sentiments aren’t raised when the money is being spent in Kamapa, adding that there is nothing bad about spending taxpayer’s money in Gulu, since it is also part of Uganda.

“Whoever is there saying no sitting, no sitting, we shall sit. And that business of saying we aren’t going to Gulu, those people don’t love you. And that business of saying we are spending Shs20Bn or shs5Bn, what is wrong with spending money in Gulu? Why do you want to spend in Kampala? We are going to spend money in Gulu and that money is budgeted for and what we are doing is budget neutral, what we are spending is money for our inland travel. In most cases, the Chairpersons of these Committees don’t go to the field but now when we said we are going to Gulu, we want reports, all of them are running to the fields,” remarked Among.

The Speaker further defended the hosting of Regional Parliamentary Sittings saying they are intended to bring Parliament closer and thanked President Museveni for allowing Parliament to host regional sittings.

“Since we said our Parliament of Uganda is a People Centered Parliament, we decided to take Parliament to Gulu, we decided to take Parliament to the people of Uganda. We have brought Parliament to the people for us to understand the issues that affect the people of greater North. I want you to clap for President Museveni who allowed for us to have regional sittings and when we go for regional sittings, we leave an effect in that area,” said Among.

The Speaker went to promise the construction of the fence along Kaunda Stadium, saying the funds will be drawn from Parliament’s Corporate Social Responsibility Budget, and further added that those are part of the effects that Regional Sittings will have in each area where they will be held.

“We are going to fence the Kaunda Grounds, we are fencing it under our Corporate Social Responsibility fund, we are giving it back to community. The problem with these opposition people, tomorrow when you give it like that, they say, they have stolen money. We have been able to build those toilets here, that is courtesy of the regional sittings and don’t mind about the water issue, we are going to put the solar pump, ours is to serve humanity.”

Speaker Anitah Among arrived in Gulu City today morning where she took part in several activities such as launching the medical camp, donating sanitary materials, and laying a foundation stone for the construction of a perimeter wall at Kaunda Grounds, among others.

While in Omoro district Speaker officially commissioned Omoro FM, a project that was started by late speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah. In her address, Among urged the masses to embrace government welfare programs such as Emyooga and PDM, aimed at eradicating poverty.
